Abstract
In an interview with Alicia Martin-Cowger on July 30, 2010, Floyd Greenwood discusses his career as a firefighter with the Boise Fire Department. Topics covered in the interview: his start at Whitney Fire District; getting injured on the job; the training he went through as a new firefighter; the layoffs as a result of the 1% Initiative; Chief Parry’s decision to not take over ambulance services; making quick assessments when arriving on scenes; the personnel changes he noticed in the 1990s; the alterations to the stations that were necessary when the first female firefighter in Boise, Connie Coulter, was hired; the qualities that are needed to be a successful firefighter; coping with the stress of the job; getting negative reactions from the public over recreational activities and meals while on-duty; and the typical routine while living at the fire station.
