Abstract

In an interview with Brandi Burns on July 25, 2014, Cordelia “Corki” Onweiler discusses her childhood in Boise during the 1930s and 1940s, including her recollections from attending school at St. Teresa’s Academy, going to the Natatorium, her family’s business interest in The Mode Limited, and her first job at C.C. Anderson’s Department Store. She also discusses how she met her husband, their life together in the 1950s when he was serving on the Boise City Council and Idaho State Legislature, and how she came to the decision to run for city council herself.

In a second interview on August 8, 2014, Corki discusses her memories of attending Central School for three years, her husband’s early life in Ustick, Idaho, and the history of her family—the Shellworths and Bruces—and the houses she grew up in on Warm Springs. She also describes how the state of the Boise River led her husband, William Onweiler, to work on creating the Greenbelt.

In a third interview on September 10, 2014, Corki discusses her term as a councilmember for Boise from 1976-1978. She describes her memories of the construction of the new City Hall, her time serving on the Library Board, how the Greenbelt plan was developed and the role her husband played, and her efforts in historic preservation. She also discusses the state of the downtown area in the 1970s, and the push for urban renewal.

In a fourth interview on November 21, 2014, Corki discusses her time on city council including the creation of the Boise City Arts Commission and development of the downtown area and West Boise. She also describes her family’s move to McCall after investing in a building project and purchasing a company, and their subsequent move out of Idaho to California.
