Biographical / Historical
The first meeting of the Ustick Apple Blossom Club convened on March 13, 1914, at the house of Mrs. Adina M. Hurst at the Ustick townsite in Idaho. She invited women from the Ustick community to form a women’s club that would serve the community. The club's name was chosen due to the prevalence of apple orchards in the area, which many members owned and operated.
Twelve women responded to the invitation, making thirteen charter members who adopted a constitution and by-laws. The club met twice a month initially but later moved to monthly meetings. The club elected a president and five officers to help govern the club’s activities.
In the following years, the club grew in number and began focusing its efforts on improving Ustick. They fundraised and completed projects including building a gravel sidewalk from the Interurban Car Line to the schoolhouse, building a shelter at the streetcar stop, donating books to the traveling library, and sending flowers to bereaved and sick persons. Contributions were also made to the Children’s Home, youth Ranch, Polio Fund, Salvation Army, Armenian Sufferers, Crippled Children, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts among other philanthropic groups.
The club continued focusing on civic matters, donating to local charities, putting on community programs throughout the year including Apple Day, and holding talks and hosting speakers on various subjects including gardening, homemaking, and politics. They visited the Idaho Legislature, art galleries, Boise gardens, and parks.
In 2020 the club voted to disband.
