Administrative History
Opera Idaho is a nonprofit organization devoted to funding and producing operas in Boise and throughout the State of Idaho. The organization was established in 1973 under the name Boise Civic Opera; the name was changed in 1983 to Boise Opera, and again in 1997 to Opera Idaho.
Throughout its history, the nonprofit has maintained a mission to foster and stimulate an interest in opera and related performing arts in Idaho through the production and presentation of operas, workshops, and other endeavors and activities for the education, training, encouragement, and inspiration of interested persons.
The mission of developing the opera community in Boise began in the 1960s with the Boise Opera Workshop, an opera enthusiasts group led by Hazel Weston. The group expanded on the efforts of the Boise Philharmonic to continue funding and organizing productions as well as lecture programs and group study of operatic works. The successes of the group’s activities and the increased interest in the production of opera performances led to the formal incorporation of Boise Civic Opera.
Opera Idaho is governed by a board of directors and advisory council, managed by full-time staff, and is supported by charitable funding. Opera Idaho Foundation, an auxiliary organization originally named La Scala Guild and later renamed Boise Opera Guild, assists the organization in obtaining resources for productions.
