Bureau of Reclamation photographs

 Collection
Identifier: MS 009

Scope and Contents

Collection contains images taken by J.D. Roderick for the Bureau of Reclamation that were specific to Boise from 1966-1969. The images were used to advertise/market the importance of electricity and precipitation. Each image is accompanied by an identical negative and an envelope that at one time housed both the image and the negative. The sleeve includes the date the image was taken as well as a caption the Bureau of Reclamation used in its advertising/marketing.

One undated image shows Boise’s Main Street illuminated at night by neon signs. It is unclear if J.D. Roderick took this image. Research indicates that the image was taken between 1945-1953.

Biographical / Historical

The Bureau of Reclamation was created under the Reclamation Act of 1902 to build infrastructure for agricultural development in the western United States. The program originally focused on construction of dams and water storage, but Congress granted additional projects to include hydropower production, flood control, municipal and industrial water, recreation, and fish and wildlife enhancement to the list of authorized project purposes.

The bureau's stated mission is to manage, develop, and protect water and related resources in an environmentally and economically sound manner in the interest of the American public. Regional management encompasses the Columbia River Basin and includes the states of Idaho, Washington, and parts of Montana, Oregon, and Wyoming.
