Biographical / Historical

Gordon Shackleton Bowen was born on October 17, 1915, in Washington, D.C. to Minnie Hinckley and Charles Bowen. He began working for the Boise Parks and Recreation Department in 1949, becoming the director in 1956 and serving until his retirement in 1978.

During his career the Boise River Greenbelt was developed; he served as one of the main driving forces behind the creation and implementation of the project along with Councilman Bill Onweiler. The Boise River Greenbelt was one of only two greenbelts in the country in the 1970s and became a model that many cities around the country used.

After retiring from his position as director, he focused on writing. He is the author of two books: Boise’s Parks: A Cause and a Trust and Street Trees in Boise, Idaho. A park in Boise’s Northend Neighborhood was dedicated on April 23, 1991, as Gordon S. Bowen Park.

He passed away on October 2, 2013.
