Biographical / Historical

Idaho Camera was founded in 1946 by Robert Nagel. In the first several years Robert operated the business in partnership with Paul M. Shanafelt and Virgil Parker. The original store was located at 910 Main Street until 1949 when it moved to a shared space with Green-Griffin Jewelers at 806 Main Street. A second location in Vista Village was opened around 1959, and in the 1970s moved within the same shopping center to a larger space. In 1974 the downtown location moved to 814 Idaho Street. A third location opened at 1312 N. Orchard Street in 1981 followed by a fourth location at the Boise Town Square Mall in 1988 and later a fifth location at 2312 N. 12th Avenue in Nampa.

Robert Nagel opened Priceless Portraits in the Overland Park Plaza in 1994. The business provided portraits along with the sale of reproduction rights to the buyer.

After Robert Nagel’s death in 1997, the business was run and co-owned by his sons Patrick and Dennis Nagel. The Orchard Street location became the primary and last location of the business before it closed in September 2020.
