Biographical / Historical

The Boise City Arts Commission was established through Ordinance No. 4272 by the Boise City Council on August 14, 1978. The commission comprised 15 members appointed by the mayor and confirmed by the city council; the 1999 by-laws allowed one member to be under 21 years old. The commission met monthly to advise and assist the city council with developing, coordinating, and promoting all forms of the arts.

The Boise City Arts Commission’s vision was to forge bold partnerships that energize the city’s artistic life—making art, in all its variations, an integral part of everyday experience and a vivid expression of Boise’s diversity, depth, and dreams. The commission’s mission was to enhance the culture of the Boise community by providing leadership, advocacy, and support for the arts.

Coinciding with the establishment of the Department of Arts & History, the commission was renamed the Boise City Arts & History Commission in March 2008.
