Scope and Contents

This collection documents Irving Warren Hart Jr.’s career as Editor of The Idaho Statesman for 13 years and as Chief Information Officer of the Selective Service System from 1940 to 1954. It also contains personal material including manuscripts, vital records, and family photographs. A significant topic represented in this collection is the first peacetime draft lottery which occurred in 1940, prior to U.S. entry into World War II. Also represented in the collection are two editions of The Idaho Statesman staff publications, The Idaho Stateswoman and The Idaho Editorman.

Biographical / Historical

Irving Warren Hart, Jr. was born July 4, 1899 in Boise, Idaho to Frances Milton Russell and Irving Warren Hart. After graduating high school in 1918, Irving began a career as a reporter for the Seattle Times in 1920. He continued working as a reporter for various newspapers including Hollywood News, Los Angeles Express, Portland Telegram and Santa Barbara Daily News until 1927 when he became the Editor of The Idaho Statesman. In September 1940, he accepted the position of Chief Information Officer for the Selective Service System under General Lewis B. Hershey in Washington, DC. He retired in 1954 as a Lieutenant Colonel.

Irving married Helen Louise Logan on September 7, 1921; they had three children together, Katharine Cornelia, Irving Warren III, and Calvin Cobb. He married his second wife, Alice Metta Johnson, on May 13, 1943; they had two children, Sara and Frances Sylvia.

In addition to writing speeches and informational publications for his position at the Selective Service System, Irving authored short stories and submitted work to magazines. He was also an active member of the Idaho-Utah Conference of Associated newspapers, serving as president in 1930, 1935, and 1939.

He died on July 26, 1958 in Prescott, Arizona. Irving is interred at the Prescott National Cemetery.
