Abstract
In an interview with Alicia Martin-Cowger on July 26, 2010, Harlow David Austad discusses his career as a firefighter with the Boise Fire Department along with his wife, Bonnie Austad. Topics discussed in this interview include Harlow’s time in the Navy during the Korean War, how he became a firefighter, some of the notable fires he fought including Gem Drug and the Eastman Building, responding to medical emergencies, not using masks in the beginning of his career, what downtime in the fire stations was like, and managing men as a captain at Central Station. Harlow also discusses the department’s organization, the many changes the department underwent during his career, the role the union played, and the toll the job can take on people’s personal lives.
