Abstract

In an interview with Alicia Martin-Cowger on July 22, 2010, William “Bill” Parry discusses his career as a firefighter with the Boise Fire Department. Parry’s career spanned from 1951-1980; he worked as a hoseman, driver, lieutenant, training officer, and captain. Topics discussed in the interview: the lack of training for new hires; what life at the fire station was like; how disagreements were handled; starting the Training Division; memorable medical calls; rivalries between fire stations and the pranks they played on each other; the change from promoting based on seniority to merit; balancing work with family life; collecting patches from other fire departments; and his transition to retirement.
