Abstract
In his interview with Alicia Martin-Cowger on July 20, 2010, Thomas Cole, who served with the Boise Fire Department, offered his memories of his career as a firefighter. Hughes’s career as a firefighter began in 1968 and continued until his retirement in 1989. He spoke on the following topics: recruitment and training of new firefighters; life in the firehouse; his reasons for entering the fire service; his dislike of medical calls; the Eastman fire and other emergency responses; firehouse pranks and rivalries; the union; the effects on department morale from the 1% Tax Reduction Initiative in 1978; his family life; his work in dispatch; and his transition into retirement.
