Abstract
In his interview with Alicia Martin-Cowger on June 4, 2010, Robert “Bob” Ruth, who served with the Boise Fire Department, offered his memories of his career as a firefighter. Ruth’s career as a firefighter began in 1977 and continued into the 2000s. He spoke on the following topics: starting as a volunteer firefighter in Mountain Home; recruitment and training of new firefighters; life in the firehouse; rescue and extrication; the Eastman fire; his reasons for staying on the line; firehouse pranks and rivalries; the effects of the 1% Tax Reduction Initiative in 1978; his family life; and his involvement in preserving BFD’s history and in organizing the 100 Year Celebration of the department as a paid professional organization.
