Abstract

Mary Crist, daughter of Eastern European immigrants. Her father (Mike Simunich) worked for Boise-Payette lumber company and bought many acres of land in the Central Bench. Mary went to Franklin School for all 12 years and recounts some stories of early childhood, including getting a permanent style haircut, raising cows and pigs, and riding her horse through Boise.

In an interview with Adam Cotterell on October 2, 2017, MaryAnn Breskin discusses living in Ustick as a child beginning in 1923. She describes how rural the area was, her early memories, the apple orchards, some of the neighbors she remembers, and playing baseball with rival schools. She also discusses her family’s vinegar business, Wood Vinegar Company, the experimental apple orchard they grew, as well as her family’s history in the Idaho territory.

Abstract Maxine Briggs was born in 1923 in Caldwell, Idaho. She is the grand daughter of Michael Roberts and Ada Frost who owned a meat market on Main Street in Caldwell. She attended Caldwell High School, graduating in 1940, then studied at College of Idaho for two years before transferring to University of Idaho. Abstract Mildred Murphy was born in 1929, her husband Tom Tillotson was born in 1919. Mildred grew up near Franklin and Orchard, Tom grew up near Roosevelt and Albion. Mildred went to Franklin School until her brother lost vision in one eye and her mother moved all her children to St. Teresa’s in downtown Boise.
